Creative Writing Guidelines

Creative writing is not aimed at conveying information, but expressing emotions, ideas and feelings. Creative writing is not professional. Creative writing is different from fiction and poetry classes in institutions. Students are supposed to show their creativity by writing a wide range of stories.   Some students have creative writing skills and others do not. However, a large number of students are not able to show their creativity due to lack of time, skills and experience.  Also, students do not know the steps that they should follow when completing different kinds of work. Most students have struggled to enhance their creative writing skills so as to perform well academically and also attain their academic goals. But, most of them have not managed to improve their skills as they do not know what they should do to improve their creativity. This has affected their work. In order to develop their creative writing, students should follow the following steps.   The first step in creative writing is deciding what one wants to write about.   Students have different ideas, feelings and thoughts that they want to express.  Thus, the topic differs from one student to another.  Students should select the most suitable topic for their work. Many students are not able to improve their creative writing skills because they are not up to date with the topic they want to write about, the topic should be simple and precise.

The second step in creative writing is developing an outline. Developing an outline is important for many students.  The outline should include ideas that needed to be explored.  Many students do not know what they want to write about, but they are unable to because they do not create an outline.  The outline should be well developed as it influences the final paper. The third step is developing a rough draft.  Students should prepare a rough draft before completing their final paper.  The rough draft should be well written and include all the details listed in the outline.  The draft enables students to express their feelings, thoughts and emotions. After preparing the draft, they should review it to identify any mistakes they have made.  The fourth step in creative writing is completing the final paper.  Students should organize their ideas well and ensure they are coherent.  Students should have organizational skills and presentation skills so as to organize and present their work well. Instructors determine whether students show creativity by examining how ideas are organized. Thus, students should arrange the ideas well so as to show their creative writing skills.  In addition, the main ideas should be supported with strong points.   How students support their key ideas determines their skills. Students who are able to support their work well get good grades unlike those who do not.

Students should be able to write original content to exhibit their creative writing skills. Instructors determine whether a student has creative writing skills by looking at the originality of the content. Thus, the content should be original.  Students should develop their own ideas when exploring their topics. Additionally, their work should be free from mistakes and grammatically correct. This is because spelling and grammatical errors affect their work.  Thus, the guidelines above are essential in improving student’s creativity in school and outside.
